Unit 4 Introduction

With this Unit, we turn from the basics of Medical English to the specific words you need to describe various organ systems. Even though the skin (integument) is the largest organ of the human body, at 12 to 15 kg weight (about 16% of the total weight of the human body) and 1.5 to 2 m2 of surface area, it is also the simplest of the organ systems. That’s where we’ll start this part of the journey.

Objectives

After you complete this unit, you will be able to:

  • Recognize prefixes, root words, and suffixes related to the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases.
  • Recall abbreviations related to the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases.
