Energy Management and Maintenance of Neurons

In this part of the book, we will see how neurons specialize in management of energy, the chemical environment, release of extracellular signaling molecules, and the maintenance of a fantastically long axon.

  1. Explain the way in which neurons make energy for essential cell functions.
  2. Explain how neurons allocate their energy among various essential cell functions.
  3. Discuss how glutamate is managed by neurons and glial cells.
  4. Describe the endosomal system and how it relates to the synthesis and release of neurotransmitters.
  5. Classify anterograde and retrograde axonal transport mechanisms.
  6. Explain how anterograde and retrograde axonal transport mechanisms are used to trace connections between neurons.
