Therapy and Treatment

This unit includes the following chapters.

“Introduction: Therapy and Treatment” explains that approaches to therapy include both psychological and biological interventions, all with the goal of alleviating distress; and explains that the goal of treatment is not to change whom a person is, but to address symptoms and/or underlying conditions.

“Mental Health Treatment: Past and Present” explains how people with psychological disorders have been treated throughout the ages; discusses deinstitutionalization; discusses the ways in which mental health services are delivered today; and distinguishes between voluntary and involuntary treatment.

“Review Questions” gives therapy and treatment review questions.

“Types of Treatment” distinguishes between psychotherapy and biomedical therapy; recognizes various orientations to psychotherapy; discusses psychotropic medications and recognize which medications are used to treat specific psychological disorders.

“Treatment Modalities” distinguishes between the various modalities of treatment; discusses benefits of group therapy.

“Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders: A Special Case” recognizes the goal of substance-related and addictive disorders treatment; discusses what makes for effective treatment; describes how comorbid disorders are treated.

“The Sociocultural Model and Therapy Utilization” explains how the sociocultural model is used in therapy; discusses barriers to mental health services among ethnic minorities.

“Critical Thinking Questions” provides critical thinking questions related to treatment and therapy.

“Personal Application Questions” provides personal application questions related to treatment and therapy.
