This unit includes the following chapters.
“Why It Matters: Psychological Disorders” is an introduction on what psychological disorders are and addresses myths surrounding mental illness.
“Introduction to Psychological Disorders” is and introduction to psychological disorders as conditions characterized by abnormal thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
“What are Psychological Disorders” describes how psychological disorders are defined, as well as the inherent difficulties in doing so.
“Diagnosing and Classifying Psychological Disorders” describes the basic features of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) and how it is used to classify disorders.
“Perspectives on Psychological Disorders” discusses historical and supernatural perspectives as well as modern biological and social perspectives on the origin of psychological disorders.
“Phobias and Social Anxiety Disorder” explains phobias and their acquisition through learning and describes the main features of social anxiety disorder.
“Panic and Generalized Anxiety Disorder” explains panic disorder and panic attacks; and describes the symptoms and prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder.
“Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders” describes the main features, development, and prevalence of obsessive-compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, and hoarding disorder.
“Posttraumatic Stress Disorder” describes the nature, development, symptoms, and risk factors associated with posttraumatic stress disorder.
“Introduction to Mood Disorders” introduces mood disorders as those in which the person experiences severe disturbances in mood and emotion.
“Major Depressive Disorder” describes the symptoms, results, and risk factors of major depressive disorder; and explains the differences between major depressive disorder and persistent depressive disorder, and identifies two subtypes of depression.
“The Biological Basis of Mood Disorders” describes genetic, biological, and psychological explanations of major depressive disorder.
“Suicide” discusses the relationship between mood disorders and suicidal ideation, as well as factors associated with suicide.
“Introduction to Schizophrenia and Dissociative Disorders” is an introduction to Schizophrenia as a severe disorder characterized by a complete breakdown in one’s ability to function in life. And introduces the main characteristic of dissociative disorders as people becoming dissociated from their sense of self, resulting in memory and identity disturbances.
“Introduction to Personality Disorders” explains that individuals with personality disorders exhibit a personality style that is inflexible, causes distress and impairment, and creates problems for themselves and others.
“Borderline Personality Disorder” identifies the basic features of borderline personality disorder, and its etiology.
“Antisocial Personality Disorder” describes the basic features of antisocial personality disorder and its etiology.
“Introduction to Childhood Disorders” Introduces neurodevelopmental disorders as a group of disorders that are typically diagnosed during childhood and are characterized by developmental deficits in personal, social, academic, and intellectual realms.
“ADHD” describes the symptoms, prevalence, and contributing factors of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
“Autism” describes the symptoms and prevalence of autism spectrum disorder, as well as the contributing factors that cause the disorder.
“Putting It Together: Psychological Disorders” gives a summary of the learning objectives covered throughout this unit.
“Discussion: Psychological Disorders” gives and assignment to write a post and to respond to the posts of 2 classmates.
