Emotion and Motivation

This unit includes the following chapters.

“Why It Matters: Emotion and Motivation” is an introduction to motivation and emotion.

“Learning Hacks: The Myth of Multitasking” explains that multitasking is actually not possible for humans; what we think of as multitasking is really just switching our attention between tasks.

“Introduction to Motivation” is an introduction to motivation and how it is influenced.

“Motivation” explains intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

“Theories About Motivation” describes basic theories of motivation, including concepts such as instincts, drive reduction, and self-efficacy.

“Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs” explains the basic concepts associated with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

“Psych in Real Life: Growth Mindsets” explains how different praise and mindsets can lead to different levels of performance.

“Introduction to Hunger and Eating” is an introduction on the physiological mechanisms that regulate hunger and eating.

“Hunger and Eating” describes how hunger and eating are regulated and differentiates between levels of overweight and obesity and the associated health consequences.

“Eating Disorders” explains the health consequences resulting from anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

“Introduction to Sexual Behavior” is an introduction to sexual behavior and research about sexuality.

“Sexual Behavior” explains basic biological mechanisms regulating sexual behavior and motivation and explains the contributions of Alfred Kinsey’s and William Masters and Virginia Johnson’s research made to our understanding of sexual behavior.

“Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity” explains sexual orientation and gender identity.

“Introduction to Emotion” is an introduction to how we express and recognize emotion.

“Theories of Emotion” compares and contrasts the the Cannon-Bard, James-Lange, Schachter-Singer two-factor, and other theories of emotion.

“The Biology of Emotions” describes the role that limbic structures play in emotional processing.

“Seeing Emotion classifies and explains how emotions are recognized and expressed.

“Putting It Together: Motivation and Emotion” gives a summary of the learning objectives covered throughout the unit.

“Discussion: Motivation and Emotion” gives an assignment to write a post and to respond to the posts of 2 classmates.
