My participation in SPUR has been a transformative experience in my academic journey. As a liberal arts college student transitioning to a larger research institution, SPUR provided an invaluable bridge, offering me the opportunity to engage in meaningful research and forge connections with mentors, faculty, and fellow researchers. Under the guidance of Dr. Menon, I conducted research on reconstructing foggy images using machine learning techniques. My responsibilities encompassed a broad spectrum of tasks, including data collection and analysis, utilization of Raspberry Pi and 3D printing technologies, coding, and extensive literature review. This hands-on experience was far from busy work; it was a deep dive into real-world research applications. The program’s structure impressed me with its balance of challenge and support. The workload, while substantial, was manageable, and the university provided excellent resources for developing crucial academic skills such as abstract writing and poster creation. This comprehensive support system gave me a clearer understanding of academia and insight into the realities of pursuing a Ph.D. Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) has significantly influenced my career trajectory. As I prepare to enter Columbia University’s computer engineering program, I feel equipped with enhanced skills in independent thinking and research methodology. The experience has sparked my interest in hardware and chip design, and I’m considering pursuing a master’s degree after my undergraduate studies. Moreover, the entrepreneurial spirit fostered during SPUR has inspired me to contemplate launching my own venture in the future. The connections I’ve made extend beyond the program’s duration. I’m continuing to collaborate with my mentor, with plans to publish a paper this winter. The friendships formed and the beauty of Utah added a personal dimension to this professional growth experience.
