Meeting With Marketing
Once we created all the mockup flyer options, we reached out to Jordan Hanzon, the Marketing and Public Relations Account Executive at the Marriott Library, and asked if he would be willing to meet with us. Luckily for us, he said yes! We asked him for his honest thoughts on our flyer mockups. He had great feedback and helped us narrow down our extensive collection of possible flyers to some top contenders. He also had feedback on some of the content we put on the flyers, which really helped us put the finishing touches on them!
After we solidified the design elements of the flyers, we wanted to double check that the claims made and the verbiage used on the flyers were not only correct, but also conscientious of others affected by our OER push. We met with bestie Rachel Hailey again (yay!) and showed her our round-two mockups. Rachel working closely with both the library and the University bookstore, had the perfect perspective for this and offered game-changing feedback. She told us it was probably and best to offer “Free Textbooks” as that could not only be a little misleading (as we sadly don’t actively have the perfect OER for every student) but also that the message was a little threatening to the bookstore, which was our main concern when we started including that phrase on the flyers. With Rachel’s help, we brainstormed another angle we could come from that would be just as impactful, without encroaching on other’s territory, or promising things we couldn’t fulfill.
That’s how we landed on our new theme: “Help Us Help You!” It’s perfect. Lightly emphasizing the importance of students’ voice and involvement, promising some form of aid/change, and leaving the conversation open.
