3 Course Topics

Course Topics

Think of your course outcomes as the itinerary for your students’ journey. Consider your stops along the way to be the topics for each module, and ask yourself the following questions:

  • How do you determine which stops to make and in what order?
  • Does each stop build on the one previous?
  • Are you missing anything important?

Helpful Tool

Sometimes it can be challenging to come up with a list of topics based on your course outcomes. You might consider using a large language model (LLM) AI. New AI tools are available for free with your UVU account. Just visit Copilot and sign in with your UVU credentials. You may use other AI tools if you prefer.

Try listing the course outcomes for your course and asking for a list of topics for a university-level course based on those outcomes:

“Given the following course outcomes, generate a list of topics for a university-level course. [Insert the course outcomes.]”

Refine the prompt as needed based on the answers you get.

Analyze the results based on your expertise. You—not the AI—know your topic best, and you get to decide what makes the most sense and what best matches your course vision.

Exercises

If you would like to complete your Course Design Plan as you go, your assigned instructional designer can help you do so as you work through each part of the Foundations of Course Design experience. Otherwise, you can complete the plan at the end. The following link contains instructions for the next section of the Course Design Plan:
