Exodus from Eastern Europe

At the same time that Italians, Greeks, and Arabs were flocking to U. S. ports of entry in the late 19th and early 20th century, waves of immigrants from Eastern Europe were also making their way here. In this section, we consider the immigration stories of Eastern European Jews and Poles, two groups whose experiences paralleled those of the Italians, Greeks, and Arabs considered in Part III. Eastern European Jews, who arrived in significant numbers from the 1880s onward, are the focus of Chapter 11. The Poles, whose migration began slightly earlier and grew rapidly during the same period are the focus of Chapter 12.
