Book Description

Framed as a question—Who Are We?—this book tells the stories of a handful of groups, often defined by ethnicity, nationality, or race, that have contributed significantly to the formation of the United States. It centers on the social, economic, legal, and historical contradictions that have confronted the American attempt to construct a multicultural, multiethnic, multiracial democracy. The narrative unfolds in two parts. Part I begins with Indigenous America and moves on to Spanish, African, and Anglo America. Part II follows eight other groups of Americans whose ancestors immigrated from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, among them Irish, Chinese, Jewish, and Arab Americans.
