Book Description

The goal of this Open Educational Resource (OER) is to help educators facilitate exploration of identity creation through the lens of gender abolition in three components. First, an overview of gender abolition, including definitions and theoretical underpinnings. Second, a list of recommended readings organized by audience type that cover precursory concepts needed to understand gender theory and texts on gender abolition itself.  The final component is an outline and resources to run a hands-on workshop that incorporates ideas from the previous readings and demonstrates the key terms and theoretical concepts of gender abolition.

The primary audience of this OER is for instructors of courses that cover topics like identity, sexuality, media, communication, and culture. Those teaching in sociology, anthropology, communication studies, women & gender studies, and the humanities in general can use this workshop in their classes. An aim of the project is to ensure that educators can easily utilize the content weekly module or a larger project for their classrooms. The kit for the workshop will include instructions on hosting and executing the lesson, advice on collecting physical materials for a low cost, and digital materials such as a powerpoint, workshop script, and examples of abstract self-portraits collected from these events.

This OER provides an immediate opportunity for applying the theoretical ideas of the readings on intersectionality, postcolonial, feminist, and gender abolition theory by empowering participants to engage in the interdisciplinary field of identity creation, alongside recommendations for individual, legal, and societal praxis in the realm of gender abolition.
