About This Book
This textbook was created through Connecting the Pipeline: Libraries, OER, and Dual Enrollment from Secondary to Postsecondary, a $1.3 million project funded by LOUIS: The Louisiana Library Network and the Institute of Library and Museum Services. This project supports the extension of access to high-quality post-secondary opportunities to high school students across Louisiana and beyond by creating materials that can be adopted for dual enrollment environments. Dual enrollment is the opportunity for a student to be enrolled in high school and college at the same time.
The cohort-developed OER course materials are released under a license that permits their free use, reuse, modification, and sharing with others. This includes a corresponding course available in Moodle and Canvas that can be imported to other platforms. For access/questions, contact Affordable Learning Louisiana.
If you are adopting this textbook, we would be glad to know of your use via this brief survey.

Adaptation Statement
This textbook has been adapted from the Douglas College Human Anatomy & Physiology I (2nd ed.) OER textbook developed by biology faculty at Douglas College, which was in turn adapted from the OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology textbook by Betts et al. Changes were made to the Douglas College textbook to better suit the needs of our specific learners. The references from the original OpenStax textbook were also added to the back matter in this textbook. No additional references were added through the adaptation process. In addition to minor content edits, the changes to the original textbook include the following:
- The “Body Structure” and “Homeostasis” chapters were moved to the beginning of the “Levels of Organization” section, and the “Nervous Regulation and Integration” section (with corresponding chapters) was placed after the “Support and Movement” section (with corresponding chapters).
- Guiding questions originally listed at the beginning of each chapter were divided and distributed throughout each chapter at the end of each chapter section.
- Videos were embedded along with corresponding QR and URL codes for each video.
- Interactive H5P elements were added in a “Practice” section at the end of each chapter.
- Extensive image descriptions were added at the end of each chapter for images that required alt text longer than 125 characters.
- Tables originally displayed as images were either reproduced as a text-based table or removed because they were deemed extensive and unnecessary.
- Canadian spellings were changed to the U.S. version of the words.
Despite these changes, we thank the original authors for all of their work.
