4.2 Metadata and Book Info

Learning Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will:

  • Learn steps to follow and what to consider while filling in metadata information.

The following is the information that is required to be added to the “Book Info” page in Pressbooks for all grant funded OER projects. Other fields not included in this list may still be beneficial to complete but are not required. For other WSU-published projects in Pressbooks, we still highly recommend including this metadata information. For any questions regarding metadata input, please contact oer@weber.edu.

Note: Fields marked with * will appear in export formats and webbook. Fields with no * will only appear on the webbook home page. If you want information that is not marked with an * to appear in the export formats, you should add that info to the copyright notice or to the front/back matter somewhere.
  • *Title: Required (provided by author)
  • *Short Title: Required if applicable. Use only in the case of long titles that may be cut short in running heads in PDF.
  • *Authors: Required.
  • Editors: Required if applicable. [1]
  • Translators: Required if applicable.
  • Reviewers: Required if applicable.
  • Illustrators: Required if applicable.
  • *Contributors: Required if applicable.
  • *Publisher: WSU
  • *Publisher City: Ogden, Utah
  • Publication Date: Required[2]
  • Language: Appropriate language selected
  • *Cover Image: Upload. This should be a book front cover, not just a stand-alone image. (Will appear in eBook files, not PDF) For more details see 4.1 Cover.
  • Primary Subject: Select a subject. (Subjects will help books be more discoverable in the Pressbooks Directory.)
  • Additional subjects: Select at least one additional subject. Using additional subjects is encouraged and helps with discoverability, but we understand that not all books will need additional subjects.
  • Copyright Year: Year of publication
  • Copyright holder: Typically, the author will retain copyright for Pressbooks projects at WSU. For scenarios where this is not the case, grant staff will work with the author to determine this information.
  • *Copyright license: WSU OER Grants require that an open license, typically a Creative Commons license, is used.
  • Short Description: Required. A short paragraph introducing the book. Will appear on PB homepage. (Provided by author)
  • Institutions: Select the institutions for all authors.

Note regarding *Authors and *Contributors: For an Author or Contributor name to appear in the drop-down list, they must first be added in the “Users” tab or the “Contributors” tab (found under “Book Info”). Names added to the “User” list will usually have some form of editing permission; names added to the “Contributor” list will not have editing access but can still receive credit for their contributions.

  1. If the book is an edited collection where the editors should be acknowledged as the main creators, then add editors to the "Author" field and add "Edited By:" to the beginning (see Intro to Tourism as an example). ↵
  2. Date the book goes live. ↵
