18 Cancelling Class

What is Expected of Me?

  • If you must cancel class on short notice, you are required notify the department head, DOC, and your students.
  • If you anticipate needed class cancellations in advance, you are required to notify the department head, the DOC, and your students. You are also required to prepare an alternative online activity.
  • You may not offer a Zoom session as an alternative to a cancelled in-person class.

Expectation for all teachers

All USU teachers, including GIs, are expected to hold class as scheduled. Class cancellations should occur only when necessary (instructor illnesses, professional obligations such as conferences, or other extenuating circumstances). USU teachers should plan vacation and personal days around their teaching schedule to prioritize  student learning. Refer to USU Policy 4002.2.3.1.2 for more information.

Unanticipated Cancellations

If you are unwell or must cancel an in-person class meeting on short notice, please notify the department head, copying the DOC on the email. Then, notify your students as well.

Anticipated Cancellations

The same is true when professional obligations require the advance cancellation of an in-person class meeting: please notify the department head, copying the director of composition on that email, and make arrangements to shift that day’s class to an online asynchronous format. You may not offer to hold class via Zoom.

Alternative Formats

When shifting to an alternative format, please use an online asynchronous activity, such as a Canvas discussion forum. Except when making an HR or DRC accommodation for a student, please do not use Zoom.
