2 Who Directs the Program?

Key Concepts in This Section

  • You are a USU employee, and the DOC is your direct supervisor.
  • Never make assumptions about important decisions. If you encounter any unanticipated challenges, consult with the DOC or ADOC before proceeding with a course of action.

The Composition Program is managed by an administrative team made up of the following individuals:

  • Director of Composition (DOC):
  • Associate Director of Composition (ADOC):
  • Graduate Assistant Director of Composition (GADOC):

These individuals trust and respect your ability as an instructor. As a GI, you are an employee of the University, and the admin team considers you a working professional.

The Composition Admin Team will act as mentors and a support system for you during your time as a GI. You are encouraged to contact the Composition Admin Team with any concerns or needs related to your position as a GI. They want you to feel successful as an instructor.

However, because you are officially employed as a GI by USU and the English Department, the Composition Admin Team also supervise you as a teacher. They work to ensure the Composition Program accomplishes its mission and that GIs are effectively helping students achieve the learning outcomes. As a USU employee, the DOC is your direct supervisor.

Because you are a new instructor, the Composition Admin Team asks that you consult with the DOC, ADOC, or GADOC whenever you encounter unanticipated situations (i.e., situations you cannot address by consulting this handbook) or any questions to which you do not have a direct and explicit answer.

Each semester, even the most seasoned instructors will encounter challenges they have never faced before. If you find yourself in this position, please do not make assumptions regarding the best course of action for this new situation—especially if the situation 1) involves the handling of sensitive or FERPA-protected information, 2) could create an unsafe environment for students, or 3) has ethical or legal implications. In these situations, contact the DOC or ADOC before pursuing a course of action (including speaking with students or discussing confidential information with your fellow GIs.
