38 Purpose
The USU Writing Centers serve students across USU’s campus and community at all levels and in all majors. On USU’s main campus, students can choose from three locations: Ray B. West, the Merrill-Cazier Library, and the Eccles Science Learning Center, which houses the Science Writing Center. There is also an Online Writing Center and a Written Feedback option. The Writing Center is available to help students in all stages of the writing process from understanding assignment descriptions, to outlining, to revising.
The Writing Center articulates their purpose on their website (http://writing.usu.edu/about/mission-statement) as follows:
Utah State University Writing Centers Mission Statement and Goals
The Utah State University Writing Centers provide a positive and inclusive environment for university and community writers to improve their communication skills. We collaborate with writers and communicators of all levels, on all subjects, and through all stages of writing. During our one-with-one tutoring sessions, we ask questions, explore ideas, research solutions, practice writing concepts, and build connections. We believe writing isn’t just a thing we do, but an extension of everything we do.
Our goals include:
- Building on writers’ strengths and empowering them to express their ideas;
- Providing an open, fun space where learning among tutors and writers is reciprocal;
- Facilitating growth and development throughout all stages of the writing process;
- Promoting academic inquiry and critical thinking;
- Upholding the USU English Department’s Commitment to inclusive excellence.
