29 Librarians

Instructional Librarians are here to help Composition Instructors as they teach their students information literacy skills and the connect composition instructors to library resources. The strongest relationships between Composition Instructors and librarians are forged when the two work together as collaborative partners. Communication is extremely important in building these relationships because it makes it possible for Composition Instructors to talk about their curriculum and the needs of their students, while librarians can share their research expertise, relevant library resources, and online learning materials.

In both ENGL 1010 and ENGL 2010 courses, librarians are available to support instructors and help students build information literacy skills. The difference lies in the various formats that librarians provide that support. In both courses this support looks like instructor-led lesson plans, research guides, tutorials, or consultations with instructors in students. Both ENGL 1010 and ENGL 2010 instructors should see their librarians as collaborators and reach out. Students in both ENGL 1010 and ENGL 2010 should feel free to contact librarians for assistance.

ENGL 1010 Library Integration

The ways in which the library interacts with ENGL 1010 are detailed below:

  • A beginning research tutorial is available in canvas to introduce students to research;
  • The library has provided lessons on research learning outcomes for instructors to teach in their own classrooms: http://libguides.usu.edu/1010lessons;
  • Librarians are available to meet with instructors to discuss these lessons and other relevant library resources;
  • Librarians are available for one-on-one research consultations with students.
  • A Research Help tab is built into the canvas course that includes access to library databases and research help guides: http://libguides.usu.edu/engl1010

ENGL 2010 Library Integration

Due to the library reorganization, ENGL 2010 library integration will be announced in Spring 2025. Currently, the library offers the following resources for ENGL 2010:

  • Three library lesson plans can be found using the following link: http://libguides.usu.edu/2010lessons
    • Sessions focus on evaluating sources, investigating a research topic, and synthesizing their research;
    • All three of the lessons work best when instructors make sure students complete pre-work and discuss with their students how the library days relate to their course assignments;
    • Most lesson plans include individual research time.
  • Librarians are available for one-on-one research consultations with students.
  • A Research Help tab is built into the Canvas course that includes access to library databases and research help guides: http://libguides.usu.edu/engl2010.

The relationship between the composition program and the library is meant to be collaborative. The composition program teaches information literacy skills, and the library is here to connect the composition program to resources to help teach those skills. The resources can be anything from online resources and lesson plans to research consultations and library instruction days. The library is here to help.
