40 GI Obligation
What Is Expected of Me?
- You are required to work at least two hours per week in the Writing Center during your first semester.
- You are required to incorporate two required tutoring sessions into the curricula for each student enrolled in a first-year composition course.
First-year Graduate Instructors work two hours per week in The Writing Center during their first semester. This is done in addition to teaching one section of ENGL 1010. You are compensated for both your work in the Writing Center and teaching an ENGL 1010 course through your monthly stipend. While tutoring in the Writing Center is not required after the first semester, Graduate Instructors are welcome to continue tutoring in the Writing Center for the duration of their time at USU. GIs who wish to continue tutoring after their first semester should be in contact with the Writing Center Directors.
In addition to working two hours a week in the WC, you are responsible for reading the training material, completing three observations, and writing a brief response about the impact of tutoring on your teaching (and vice versa). All training materials can be found on the Canvas Writing Center Tutors page.
While tutoring in the Writing Center is not required after the first semester, you are welcome to do so! You would be paid hourly, starting at $14, and you can work a maximum of four hours. You may continue tutoring in-person or provide written feedback. The directors understand if your schedule doesn’t allow you to continue tutoring at the WC.
The Writing Center holds a staff meeting on the second Monday of each month. You are welcome to attend, but this is not a requirement. Your optional attendance at these meetings and activities will help you become better acquainted with Writing Center staff as well as engage with Writing Center research and theory.
