46 Graduate Assistant Director of Composition Application
The Graduate Assistant Director of Composition assists the Director and Associate Director of Composition (DOC & Associate DOC) in mentoring Graduate Instructors, planning the English 1010 and 2010 curriculum, and planning and teaching instructional curricula. The Graduate Assistant Director can be a returning GI (after their first-year) or a PhD student. Both have their pros and cons but what the committee is looking for is someone who has excellent classroom teaching skills, the ability to organize and mentor peers, an interest in the theory and practice of writing, and conduct themselves professionally.
Typical Application Materials
- A letter of application (one page, single-spaced) detailing your interest and qualifications for the position, as well as describing what you would like to accomplish in this role
- The name of a faculty member willing to act as a reference (please include in application letter)
- A teaching statement (1-2 pages)
- A copy of your available IDEA teaching evaluations
- A current CV
- Written or video responses to the following questions (max. 1-2 single-spaced pages or a 3-5 minute video. Please select the format that best helps you communicate your message; the committee will be happy to review your materials in either format.)
- How might you contribute to the continued development of the 1010 curriculum and the preparation of new GIs?
- Being the Graduate ADOC requires an additional set of responsibilities. In addition, the Graduate ADOC must navigate multiple roles as graduate student, instructor, an administrator. With this context, please respond to the following questions:
- How might you effectively navigate the additional responsibilities and overlapping roles of the Graduate ADOC?
- How might you prioritize confidentiality when communicating in this role?
- How might you support other GIs as both their peer and mentor?
- How do you incorporate student feedback into your pedagogy? As you respond, you might, for example, select one comment on your IDEA evals and discuss how the feedback influenced your teaching; or you might include some brief feedback from an in-class survey and discuss how you revised based on the feedback.
- Optional: Is there anything else you want to discuss as you consider this role?
In addition to the application materials, the committee will also consider your work during the previous semester, including your teaching observations and personal interactions. An offer for the position is contingent upon a satisfactory background check.
