23 Impact of Technology on Social Justice, Equality, and Inclusion

Technology can both promote and undermine social justice, equality, and inclusion, depending on how it is developed, deployed, and regulated. In some cases, technology can serve as a tool for empowering marginalized communities, increasing access to resources, and challenging existing power structures. However, it can also perpetuate and exacerbate social and economic inequalities, as well as create new forms of exclusion and discrimination. For example, the use of facial recognition technology has been criticized for its potential to reinforce racial biases and contribute to discriminatory policing practices.

Promoting Safe and Responsible Technology Use

Promoting responsible technology use and safeguarding against technological risks involve a combination of individual, organizational, and governmental actions. Some strategies include:

  • Developing ethical guidelines and codes of conduct for technology developers and users
  • Implementing transparent and accountable decision-making processes in the development and deployment of technology
  • Encouraging stakeholder engagement and public participation in discussions about the social and ethical implications of technology
    • Fostering a culture of responsible innovation and technology use through education and awareness-raising initiatives
    • Establishing regulatory frameworks and policies that address potential risks and unintended consequences of technology, while also promoting innovation and development.
