7 Research Reflection by Mads Ward

Faculty Mentor: Keith Bartholomew (City & Metropolitan Planning, University of Utah)

My undergraduate research experience has been both challenging and inspiring, as it has encouraged me to take risks, refine my analysis and writing skills, and take ownership of my work. This project will be the basis for my Honors Thesis, and it has allowed me to combine my knowledge and interests in urban planning, design, and dance performance in the real-world setting of our local community. This multidisciplinary work is a rare opportunity. Additionally, this research experience has encouraged me to better understand and rethink community engagement and outreach practices, which are often the foundation of our work as planners. Finally, in the final year of my undergraduate studies, my research has served as my transition into the professional world and allowed me to build relationships with and learn from knowledgeable community members. I am grateful to Professor Keith Bartholomew for his continuous mentorship, as well as the Office of Undergraduate Research and the Honors College for their support as I take on this ambitious task of rethinking planning in Salt Lake City. I’m looking forward to building upon this work in my future planning career.
