This summer, my undergraduate research focused on analyzing long-term changes in riparian vegetation health using satellite imagery and stream discharge data in two Utah watersheds: Red Butte Canyon and Albion Basin. By combining Google Earth Engine, ArcGIS Pro, and Python, I created a workflow to extract monthly NDVI values from Landsat and Sentinel-2 imagery and compare them to seasonal discharge trends from USGS gauge stations. I applied spatial buffers around stream networks to isolate vegetation directly influenced by streamflow and generated maps and graphs that visualized growing season dynamics across more than two decades.

Through this project, I developed technical skills in remote sensing, geospatial analysis, and environmental data visualization, skills that are critical in the field of geography and GIS. I also gained firsthand experience with real-world data challenges, including resolution trade-offs, data gaps, and the complexities of comparing spatial and temporal variables. This research solidified my interest in hydrology and riparian systems, and it gave me confidence in applying my classroom learning to independent scientific research. It has directly influenced my academic path by preparing me for graduate school and inspiring me to pursue a career in applied environmental GIS, where I can use geospatial tools to address ecological and climate-related challenges.
