86 Research Reflection by Kylee Fernandez

Faculty Mentor: Mark Mahan and Sama Noroozi (Neurosurgery, University of Utah)

I am beyond grateful for Dr. Mark Mahan and my mentor Sama Noroozi Gilandehi for their support during my undergraduate education. Over the past two years, I have conducted research in Dr. Mark Mahan’s lab, focusing on the NETosis project, which I’ve detailed further in my Research Abstract. In the lab, I worked closely with Sama and gained experience in presenting research findings, using the confocal microscope, capturing high quality images for presentation, slicing nerves, and performing data analysis which required mastering with Image J/Fiji Software. My biggest challenge in the research was learning how to effectively use the confocal microscope. However, through persistence and mentorship, I eventually mastered the process and even assisted to train a new undergraduate member on slicing the nerves. The research experience taught me the importance of patience and practice while learning new skills. The research projects helped build my confidence and leadership skills in the laboratory setting. This research project deepened my understanding of neurobiology prior to taking necessary undergraduate courses. The Office of Undergraduate Research at the University of Utah funded and supported my research project with Dr. Mark Mahan’s Lab, for which I am extremely grateful as a first-generation undergraduate student. This research allowed me to gain critical skills and knowledge that will prepare me for medical school. It strengthened my passion to connect science with patient care to directly impact patient health outcomes. I plan to continue conducting impactful research projects. In the future, I aspire to be a medical doctor that treats patients and preforms research experiments.
