The University of Utah is rare for many reasons. For me, it’s been many things. I once heard President Randall describe it as an “AND school.” Research AND Academics AND Athletics AND Professional Development. This has certainly been true for my experience as a Ute. As I look forward to being an alumni, I look back at my education and owe much of my success to my hands-on learning in research labs. When I visited Washington, DC, last April, I lobbied for continued research funding from our Utah Senators and Representatives. It was encouraging to see that government leaders see great value in pursuing R&D because of our University’s success. I believe undergraduate research is the best way to ensure students in STEM fields receive the highest caliber education. My research gave me confidence and motivation to continue to a degree that challenged me greatly. For these reasons, I cannot thank the U enough for giving me tactful skills to pursue research.
