27 Exploring the Radicalization of Youth in Alt-Right Spaces through Screenwriting

In the age of information, we have also entered an age of dis-information, where communities are more able to self-isolate than ever before. The younger generation has grown up in a world where volume often outweighs accuracy. For instance, a survey by The Economist revealed that 20 percent of Americans between the ages of 18-29 agreed with the statement “The Holocaust is a myth.” An additional 30 percent saying they neither agreed nor disagreed.

Conversely, it’s easier and easier to hate those with differing views. But it’s also a time where empathy is more important than ever. My research delved into the motivations behind Neo-Nazism, uncovering a journey that often commences with memes and tweets, guided by algorithms that gradually lure vulnerable individuals into hatred. Organizations like Life After Hate have emerged to counter this trend, comprising former members determined to prevent others from following their path.

My screenplay, Red Laces, tells the story of a young Neo-Nazi who unknowingly falls for a Jewish woman. Despite discovering her identity, he continues the relationship, but the second she understands who he is and what he’s done with his life, she leaves him, as almost all of us would. However, upon realizing the gravity of his actions, he grapples with redemption. His former cult members attempt to reclaim him, but it’s through the empathy of those around him that he finds liberation.

In presenting this story, my aim is for audiences to confront a challenge I’ve personally struggled with this past year: empathizing with “the enemy.” It’s a reminder that hatred only breeds more hatred, and the only path to peace is understanding.
