Step 9: Sale Paperwork

Once the seller and buyer have agreed on a price, it is time to complete the sale paperwork. A bill of sale, typically provided by the seller, should be completed and signed by both parties. Several states in the western US require a brand inspection for ownership transfers. If this is the case in your state or the state from which you are purchasing the horse, a brand inspector must be contacted to examine the horse and provide the necessary transfer paperwork, which is typically paid for by the seller.

Additional health forms will be needed if the horse travels across state lines. This includes a negative Coggins test and a certificate of veterinary inspection. If you know the horse will need these documents, you can request them during the PPE.
