Step 11: Integration into the Herd
Once a horse has completed quarantine, it is time to introduce them to the herd and their new living environment. When introducing new horses, start in a large space that allows them room to move away from each other. Introduce one horse at a time to the new horse, beginning with the most docile horses and adding additional horses as they settle.
Alternatively, if you have two pens with a sturdy, safe fence, you may choose to allow the horses an over-the-fence introduction before turning them out together. You must be careful not to do this with any fence that the horses could get their feet caught in, such as a panel.
It is normal for the new horse to take time to become comfortable in the herd and the new environment. Some horses will need a few weeks, while others will need a few months.
