Step 10: Transportation and Quarantine

It is now time to pick up the horse from the seller. If there is a break between when you purchase the horse and when you pick them up, have a solid contract in place. It is best to pay the seller at the same time you pick up the horse. Some sellers may be willing to deliver the horse to your facility for an extra fee. Remember to have the proper legal documents for transportation, including a brand inspection and a certificate of veterinary inspection if needed.

Upon arrival at your property, new horses should be quarantined following veterinary guidelines and biosecurity protocols. A quarantine period should last two to four weeks, during which you closely watch for signs of illness or disease. The stress of transportation and being in a new place may trigger an underlying infection.

The quarantine period is also an ideal time to update the horse’s vaccines and dewormer to protect them and your herd.
