16. Dermatology: Moles

Evaluation Dialogue Between Doctor-Patient:
Doctor Good morning. How can I help you?
Patient Pues vengo a revisarme los lunares.
Doctor How old are you? Have you had them examined previously?
Patient Tengo 38 años y es la primera vez que me los reviso, pero vengo porque tengo uno en la espalda que me parece que ha crecido.
Doctor Are you in the sun frequently? Do you use UV protectant? Did you get sunburned as a child often?
Patient No, ahora solo me expongo cuando hago deporte. Suelo jugar a golf en verano, pero es verdad que de niño sí me quemaba todos los veranos.
Doctor Have you ever gone to a tanning bed to get a tan?
Patient Sí, un año fui unas 20 sesiones.
Doctor Do you have any illnesses, or are you receiving any treatments regularly? Are you allergic to any medications?
Patient No tengo enfermedades ni tomo ningún tratamiento y soy alérgico a las penicilinas.
Doctor Do any of your close family members have melanoma?
Patient Sí, mi padre y mi tío paterno.
Doctor And other types of cancer?
Patient Sí, mi tio paterno tambien tuvo cáncer de pancreas.
Doctor Please, take all your clothes off, except your undergarments, and lie down on the table.
Post-Examination Dialogue Between Doctor-Patient:
Doctor After examination, you have a lot of moles, over 100 all over your body. The one on your back you noticed is larger, atypical, and should be looked at.
Patient ¡Ay! ¿Pero es malo?
Doctor Looking at it with the dermatoscope, it’s multicolored, asymmetrical, and in one area shows signs of growth. Because of this, it would be prudent to take it off, analyze it, look at it under a microscope, and rule out the possibility of melanoma.
Patient De acuerdo. ¿Cuándo debo volver?
Doctor If it works for you, we’ll do it in an operating room with local anesthesia, next Monday.
Patient Vale. Muchas gracias por todo.
