3. Family Medicine: Diarrhea

Evaluation Dialogue Between Doctor-Patient:
Doctor How are you feeling today?
Patient Estoy fatal. Llevo con diarrea un mes. Quiero que me manden al digestivo. Seguro que tengo algo.
Doctor Tell me more. What is the diarrhea like? How many times a day do you have diarrhea? Have you noticed blood or pus in your feces?
Patient No, es una diarrea líquida. No hay sangre ni pus, pero me duele la barriga y me siento muy hinchado después de comer. Esta barriga no es la mía, parece que estoy embarazada.
Doctor Alright, I’m going to examine you and see if we should order any other tests.
Patient Quiero ver un especialista.
Doctor First, there are more tests that we can do here. If we don’t resolve the problem, we’ll consider a referral.
Patient Vale, doctora.
Doctor Lie down on the exam table and we’ll examine your stomach.
Doctor We’ll order a stool test: coproculture, parasite detection, and H. pylori detection. For now, try a bland diet and one Mebeverine tablet every eight hours for stomach pains. Turn in your samples and we’ll speak again when you have the results.
Patient De acuerdo, doctora. ¿Pero seguro que no tengo nada malo?
Doctor It doesn’t seem like there’s anything to be alarmed about, but we’re going to take a closer look. Once we have the test results, we’ll see if we should use another treatment.
