Graduate Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Program of Study leading to a Master of Science Degree (Data taken from College of Nursing Bulletins, J. Willard Marriott Library -Archives, University of Utah)

1957 (first approved curriculum)

32-34 credit hours in psychiatric-mental health theory and practice (some courses were taken in the Department of Psychiatry)

9-15 credit hours of thesis in the major area

17-18 credit hours in statistics, methods of research, curriculum, teaching, evaluation, and administration

12-18 credit hours in a minor or supporting work.

Requirements for admission to Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Program of study. These requirements continued through to the 1990s.

Applicants may be required to take supplemental courses for credit not considered part of the graduate program.

Applicants must have graduated from an accredited nursing program with a B Average or better and be licensed in at least one state and eligible for registration in Utah.

Evidence of satisfactory performance and professional qualifications is required. (Usually in the form of letters from professionals in the field.)

Requirements for progression in the graduate program.

Maintain a B average with no courses less than a C.

The student’s program of study must have been approved by the Graduate Committee of the College of Nursing, and the Graduate Council of the University of Utah, and the Dean of the College of Nursing.
