Chapter Summary

Key Takeaways

Good definitions are foundational to good research. For quantitative studies, establishing a solid conceptual and operational definition and then designing valid and reliable measures is essential to good data. For qualitative studies, the idea is similar although the process is different – a qualitative study’s definitions must be solid but there are additional steps to take throughout the study to enhance authenticity and trustworthiness. For all research, knowing what you’re interested in and how you’ll look for it is key.
