Chapter Summary

Key Takeaways

You’ve now learned about the guiding principles of research ethics. Although the same ideas might be present in your discipline’s general code of ethics, considering how ethical decisions are made and upheld specifically in research is important, especially considering the many ways research can go wrong if not carefully considered and monitored. We talked about the three principles of the Belmont Report, the role of the Institutional Review Board, and vulnerable populations. We also discussed mistakes in research and how those differ from research misconduct. Throughout the book, we’ve also been talking about the ethics of AI use in research – hopefully this chapter gave you some additional points to think about regarding authorship and writing.
