Appendix B Overview of Each Assignment of the EBP Project

Selection of Group Members: Students are to select 3 other peers for which they will complete the project. Once you have made your selection, you cannot switch to a different group. For this assignment, EACH person in your group needs to submit, since the groups aren’t made within Canvas yet.

Group Contract: With your group’s input, complete the Group Contract form. Really think through scenarios of “what if” for things that might go wrong (because, trust me, they more than likely will) and how to handle it. This is your agreement with your peers as you work on the EBP Project together. You will use this contract to refer back upon as situations arise throughout the semester. Critically think it through. Only one person from your group needs to submit. You will also outline “who does what”. As you fill this out, remember to be part of the solution and do your best to problem solve as a team before coming to your instructor. (Please refer disgruntled issues to me after trying to work them out on your own. I need to be informed as it will play a part in project grades (see self and peer-evaluations).) Only one member of your team needs to submit this, as I will have the Canvas groups set up by the time of this assignment.

Topic Selection: This is a very broad and general topic. I have supplied a list to choose from and you will simply enter the chosen topic into a fill-in text submission for the assignment.

PICO & Clinical Question: This is when you will make a PICO and Nursing Clinical Question based on your topic. You are not married to this once you submit. It can change. I simply want to see that you can create a nursing-specific clinical question that includes the required “parts”. If you do change your clinical question, however, pass it by me via email to be sure it still meets requirements needed.

EBP Poster Draft: You will fill in your poster template with as much info as possible, and then submit. Once submitted, Canvas will select a peer review group to provide feedback and edits.

Synthesis of Evidence Table: The first “draft” submission requires just 8 articles. However, you will include ALL articles that help to answer your clinical question (but a minimum of 16 is needed for a grade) for your final Synthesis of Evidence Table. I have found this worksheet to be helpful in order to keep students on track with the articles they are finding along the way. Past students have stated that they wish they had started this table very early in the semester. Don’t put this off! Log any article that you think is answering your clinical question and then delete them later if you don’t need them. Perhaps make this a Google Docs so you can work on it together and not duplicate things. As you go, make sure your APA formatting is correct. This will save time later when you put the top 8 articles onto your poster (just copy/paste!).

EBP Poster: The final product! You will have had the opportunity to make corrections and changes based on peer-review, and then submit.

EBP Poster Presentations: These will be presented in person, if all goes according to plan. This will be similar to a professional conference poster presentation. You are welcome to invite family and friends, co-workers, instructors, etc.

Self-Evaluations: You are to do a very comprehensive evaluation of how well you contributed to your group. You will also evaluate how you met each course outcome. When you think about the course outcomes, you will need to utilize SMART outcomes (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Reasonable, Timely). Meaning, you need to be very specific about the components of the course that led you to achieve (or not achieve) the outcomes. Be honest – self-evaluation is one of the most difficult pieces of becoming a critical thinker.

Peer-Evaluations: You are to evaluate each of the other 3 members of your group on a scale of 0-10 (10 being fair and equity with regard to contributions). The grade of 10/10 equates to what a reasonable team member would contribute. It is considered average. Anything below 10 means they contributed just a percentage of what a reasonable team member would have contributed (ex: 7/10 means they contributed just 70% of what would have been reasonable for a busy nursing student). If you rate someone below a 10, you will need to be very specific as to how they did not contribute equitably. Times/Dates/documentation needed. See document for explanation as to how grading of your peer works for this. Remember, it is based on contributory efforts, not how well you liked someone.
