Herniation Syndromes

The brain is enclosed within the bones of the skull. If something happens to increase intracranial pressure — bleeding, failure of cerebrospinal to circulate, edema, among other causes — then the brain is forced out of its normal compartment and into other compartments. This class of brain injury is called herniation.
